Elias and Laia's kiss When Elias tells Laia that she's the answer to his prayers and she is his temple was one of my favorite scenes from A Sky Beyond the Storm. I absolutely adored this scene and my favorite quote is: "I wish I could live a thousand lives so that I can fall in love with you a thousand times!" A Scholar girl by the name of Laia lives in the Martial Empire with her grandparents and brother Darin in the city of Serra. Their existence is a grueling one as they are seen as second-class citizens by the ruling Martial elite. Darin is arrested by Martial forces and accused of being an anti-Empire rebel. Laia, a Scholar and Elias, a Martial, are running for their lives from the Empire. They plan to head to Kauf prison, where they will attempt to free Darin, Laia's brother, who has been imprisoned there. Darin has special skills as a blacksmith that make him essential to the survival of his people, the Scholars. Laia is a former slave who escaped her master's clutches. Elias is a soldier who defied army orders and defected to the rebel cause. As the book begins, they are in grave danger. Elias and Laia make their way through the Empire's catacombs, hunted by the evil Commandant and her minions who plan to execute them for their crimes against the Empire.
An Ember in the Ashes By Sabaa Tahir Elias and Laia (these two could work, they look the part
Elias is a soldier. Neither is free. Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. Here we get to delve deeper into Elias and Laia's character development, as well as Helene's (a great addition to the point of view narrators). I loved how artfully the author explored Elias' struggle with his inner demons, Laia's self-confidence, and Helene's loyalties. Most of the characters were fully fleshed out and they really drove the story. An Ember in the Ashes is told in alternating points of view from Laia (a 17-year-old Scholar girl) and Elias (a Mask, an elite warrior, at Blackcliff—the Martial military academy). Both wish to be free from the restrictions of their lives, but neither truly knows how to obtain their freedom. At the story's outset, Laia lives in fear of the Martials destroying her family's precarious. Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire's most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom. But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias.

Leah is a slave and Elias is a soldier. However, neither one of them is free under the Martial Empire. In this place, defiance is met with death. Those who don't vow their lives and bodies to the Emperor face the risk of execution of not only themselves, but their loved ones as well and all that they hold dear. Elias and Laia are on the run from Blackcliff, which means the book starts with an epic opener. Helene is tortured for information on Elias's and Laia's escape. Later on, she is tasked with finding Elias and, eventually, with killing him.
Elias and Laia Laia of Serra is the main character of An Ember in the Ashes. She's a Scholar, a race of people who are oppressed. Scholars once ruled the lands having been known for their knowledge and arts, but it has since been conquered by the Martials, who named it The Empire. A Torch Against the Night picks up where An Ember in the Ashes left off. Elias and Laia are running for their lives through the catacombs trying to escape The Commandant and her people. While there, they encounter a girl, a creature who wants silver. She accuses Elias of being the reaper of death, and she wonders what Laia is.
