Introduction Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz. (synonym Kalopanax pictus ), also known as castor aralia or prickly castor oil tree, is a deciduous tree that is the only species of the genus Kalopanax in the family Araliaceae. It is mainly distributed in East Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, and Russia, etc [1,2] (Fig. 1). Kalopanax septemlobus maximowiczii. De variëteit maximowiczii is wellicht nog karakteristieker dan de soort K. septemlobus. Het is een middelgrote tot grote boom die 10 tot 15 m hoog wordt, onder gunstige omstandigheden hoger. De dikke twijgen zijn met scherpe stekels bezet.
