The only drawback is, that you level them more slowly, if you wear part light armor and part no armor, then both will increase at half the rate, if you were fully unarmored or fully lightly armored. 73 votes, 48 comments. true. Pretty much verifies the general opinion - medium armor is useless, better to go with light armor for very nearly the same protection and lower weight, plus with the exception of Ebony Mail, all of the late-game artifact-level (pre-enchanted) light armor options are better than the medium options.
