In the early 1980s, the brand changed from Datsun to Nissan in line with other models by the company. Nissan decided to base the new rally car off the N14 Pulsar (Sunny in Europe and Sentra in New Zealand). This new N14 Pulsar was rounder than the previous generation and came in 3 and 5-door hatchback variants, along with a 4-door sedan.
