The Rolex Explorer 14270 is a watch that is so simple in its execution that people just don't talk about it. Well, with the 30th anniversary of its release having just passed, it is time to put the spotlight on this sleeping giant. The Rolex Explorer, as an entire line, certainly needs no introduction, but let's give it one anyway. In 2001, Rolex introduced the Explorer ref. 114270 to house the new Caliber 3130. The majority of the design carried over from the later examples of the ref. 14270. Explorer 114270 with an updated movement For the new Explorer 114270, Rolex fitted it with the updated Caliber 3130 movement . On the outside of the Explorer 114270, Rolex did add solid end links to the Oyster bracelet, removed the lug holes from the case, and switched to Super-LumiNova for its luminous material; however, almost everything else stayed the same. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 14270 and it's 3000 movement, I chose to go with the upgraded 114270 after reading James Dowling's article below. #2 · Apr 4, 2020 The 114270 has SELs, a more modern movement and a super luminova dial. All that for not a whole lot more than the 14270. The five digit reference has a tritium dial, but it's kind of negated by the painted numerals. Which do you have - or which would you choose - and why? 7 comments Best Add a Comment Hrmnsn • 3 yr. ago It's the 114270 reference that was made between 2001 and 2010 (after the 14270 that introduced the "modern" Explorer style, and before the 214270 took the size up to 39mm for over a decade.) This one is from 2004 and the full set included the original purchase receipt (£1,950 - bargain!) I've never had a watch that I've enjoyed.
