They improved and fixed the problem for the 2004+. Comes now a new DOHC 3.0-liter, four-valve, six-cylinder engine. It increases power over the 2.5-liter four by 28 percent -- to 212 hp at 6000 rpm with 210 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. To the good old Outback, Subaru has added a powerful new six-cylinder engine, dual sunroofs, special alloy wheels, leather seats, a stability control system, and a long list of creature comforts. And you'll pay for every bit of it: The VDC is $29,997 -- more than $6,000 above the nicely equipped Outback Limited, making it Subaru's top-of-the-line vehicle.
