December 6, 2021 Many students are familiar with the story of The Three Little Pigs, but they might not know different versions of this story that provide an unexpected twist. Here are some of my favorite versions of The Three Little Pigs. The Three Little Pigs, by James Marshall We absolutely love Marshall's version of the familiar tale. The text doesn't stray too far from the original, but Marshall's unique sense of humor brings the story alive. Plus, the illustrations are hilarious. We own this one, and I've read it too many times to count.

" The Three Little Pigs " is a fable about three pigs who build their houses of different materials. A Big Bad Wolf blows down the first two pigs' houses which are made of straw and sticks respectively, but is unable to destroy the third pig's house that is made of bricks. In this Appalachian version of the classic tale, Hamlet, the youngest pig, rescues her two greedy brothers from the clutches of the "mean, tricky old drooly-mouth fox." In it, the three pigs were paid for their work from a farmer and his wife, and they each used their money to set off on their own. But the little pig saw the wolf's big paws through the keyhole, so he answered back: No! No! No! Not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin! Then the wolf showed his teeth and said: Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down. So he huffed and he puffed and he blew the house down!

The anonymous fable or fairy tale of the Three Little Pigs is one of those classic anonymous tales which we hear, and have read to us, when we are very young. The fable contains many common features associated with the fairy tale, but there are some surprises when we delve into the history of this well-known story. RL 2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures. I decided to teach this using The Three Little Pigs! Who doesn't love those little guys?!!! 3 Little Dassies by Jan Brett is a colorful book that has beautiful illustrations on every page, just like all her books. This version of the three little pigs is set in Africa and is the story of three dassies trying to escape a hawk. This is one of my personal favorites for alternate versions of the three little pigs.
