The Chinese Type 69 Tank
The Type 69 ( Chinese: 69式; pinyin: Liùjiǔ shì) and Type 79 ( Chinese: 79式; pinyin: Qījiǔ shì) are Chinese first generation main battle tanks. Both were developments of the Type 59 medium tank (a locally produced Soviet T-54A) with technologies derived from the T-62. The type 69 in its final version entered in service and was publicly revealed in 1982 but however failed to meet the Chinese PLA's requirements, ended up as an export model, and eventually produced to an estimated of 2200 to 2500 vehicles of which around 2000 were exported. The Type 69 is China's first attempt to design a main battle tank (MBT) independently. It is generally regarded as a modest upgraded version of the Type 59/T-54 MBT, with limited number of improvements. The design proposal was issued in 1963, and the initial design completed in 1964. The first Type 69 prototypes were built in 1964. The Type 69 85mm RPG ( 69式40毫米火箭筒 ), made by Norinco, is a Chinese variant of the Soviet RPG-7. First introduced in 1972, [2] the Type 69 is a common individual anti-tank weapon in service with the PLA. More advanced grenade rounds were developed in the 1980s and 1990s to meet the requirements of modern battlefields.

Production of this vehicle spanned 1958 to 1985 to which some 9,500 examples were acquired. The Type 69-II variant also featured 3 command tank subvariants (Type 69-IIB, Type 69-IIC, and Type 69-IIC1) and the chassis was used as a foundation for other kinds of tanks and armored vehicles. The Type 69 tank was a domestic Chinese tank design intended to update the original Type 59, which was itself based on the Soviet T-54A. This included technology obtained through a T-62 captured during the Sino-Soviet border clashes of 1969. The Type 69 features a 100 mm smoothbore gun, an Infrared (IR) spotlight, laser rangefinder, and a Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) protection system.
