With a good deal of courage and the concentrated power of the 2-litre turbo engine in the BMW 320i, BMW Motorsport GmbH fielded a touring car against the flat sports racers in the World Championship of Marques: Gilles Villeneuve and Eddie Cheever took the chequered flag in the Six Hour Race at Canadaâ s Mosport circuit. The new BMW 320 was given the famous Warsteiner design, which was to be seen on Obermoser/GS vehicles since the 1975 season. However, Obermoser was unable to follow up on his previous successes in the new Group 5 vehicle. His best single result in the DRM 1977 was fifth place at the Int. Westfalen Cup Race (Zolder, Belgium).

The 4th Generation Group 5 E21 320 Turbo pictured here was campaigned by Team McLaren in the IMSA Camel GT series and piloted by the fabled David Hobbs. The less-than-one-ton chassis housed a 2.0-liter M12 making more than 650 horsepower, which rotated the ridiculously wide Goodyear slicks to unfathomable speeds. As the turbo engine didn't permit the conventional driver's position to be restrained due to space constraints, a right-hand-drive car was built. The Group 5 BMW 320 continued to be raced with considerable success both in naturally aspirated and turbocharged guises into the 1978 season. In the United States, the works supported McLaren North America cars won several races but the sheer number of Porsche 935s alone made their task very difficult.
