2 Posted April 22, 2010 OK so i'm new round here, but i do love making stuff! It recently occured to me that i have 5 MIDI devices in my studio, none of which have MIDI through ports, and an audio interface with just one MIDI port for in and out Location: australia by widdly » Fri Sep 27, 2013 1:43 am Merging a keyboard and a midi clock would be no problem. Midi merge can get overloaded with really heavy midi streams like multitimbral 16 channels at once type stuff. You could build the 16f88 version on perf. You can get a usb pic programmer from china via ebay for $10. "midi merge is an Y cable" . Is it true? can I simply build a box with a midi port linked in Y with other 2 midi ports? I've always thought that midi merge boxes were a mix of circuits, resistors and ICqs. zarquin Members 622 Members Posted January 11, 2006 short answer: you can't do it like that. The midi keyboard has these connections: USB midi out (from DAW usb to midi keyboard to midi out to synth) The USB midi out doesn't work standalone. So what I want to do is merge both midi outputs on the midi keyboard. If I turn midi monitoring off in Ableton, theoretically, there won't be any doubles of midi signals.

Since MIDI is basically a UART protocol, and Arduino only has 1 or 2 hardware UARTs, but you want more MIDI ports, you would have to use software UART library, which is well documented on Arduino website. Tommonen • 6 yr. ago Okay thanks. I read somewhere that arduino doesent have many inputs. I want to build a circuit that will live hidden in my Eurorack case, and take MIDI from two inputs (Expert Sleepers ES9 & physical DIN port in the case), and distribute it to four outputs (ALM Pam's New Workout, Expert Sleepers Disting, LPZW Tram8 and Squarp Rample) The MIDI Thru distribution section seems simple enough. It has two MIDI input ports which are merged together by a microcontroller and then split to five MIDI outputs. Programmed microcontroller is included with a PCB or Kit purchase. It has optimized schematics for 5V and 3.3V MIDI sender devices, optimized circuitry for optocoupler to minimize false triggering and improve sensitivity. Kenton MERGE boxes combine the data from multiple separate MIDI sources (e.g. Master keyboards or controllers) into a single MIDI data stream which appears at both of the MIDI out sockets, and includes all the essential MIDI data including MIDI Clock, MIDI time code and SysEx. Merge-4.

Description | MIDI Merge Box 2×1 is tool what merges MIDI data from two inputs to one output. The known fact is that it is impossible to merge the data directly as a logical sum of the MIDI data. That solution generates nonsensical data. So it is necessary to use special algorithm for the data merging. Whatever, make sure you get a merge (or thru box if you ever have the need) box that lets you add power to the device. I got stung by this with a "self powered" MIDI thru box that worked on all my old gear that sends MIDI buss power over one of the pins, but a lot of new gear - (you know who you are Moog Phatty!) does not send MIDI buss power at all so if you need a merge/thru on it, you are.

This will be our single destination where both signals will be merged. Now that all our connections have been made, let's configure our MIDI routing. We can do that by using Auracle for X-Series. Daniel This is an interesting approach, Daniel. Did you get any further with it? It hadn't actually occurred to me to use multiple CPUs with a shared flag, but it makes a lot of sense. Trying to do it in software on a single CPU seems to raise more problems. Would each CPU run the same code? 3 Answers Sorted by: 2 No, combining them in hardware is not possible. Normal way of doing this is to have two MIDI inputs, and two UARTs on a microcontroller receiving messages from both inputs. Then the microprocessor merges the messages so that correct MIDI data bytes belong to correct MIDI status bytes.
