The jury of four women and two men found that James Welzbacher, 72, threatened Stanley Sala of Brooklyn with a large, ball-peen hammer during an altercation late on July 4, 2014, at Sala's daughter's home on Devils Lake. Candidate Kristi Drake, who tied for second with Catherine Sala and lost a drawing for the nomination to advance to the November general election, requested the recount. Incumbent Probate Judge Gregg P. Iddings finished first in the Aug. 7 primary. If the recount puts Sala ahead or affirms the tie, then Sala would be the second nominee.
