The 'tread' is the flat part of the step, where your foot lands. Indoor stairs have a typical riser of 17-18cm with a tread of 22-24cm. They're also required to have handrails, and there's usually a wall to support you. Risers for outdoor steps should be no more than 15cm high. Their tread should be at least 30cm deep. The aim is to create a good rhythm for people when walking up and down steps, so a lower riser height (e.g. 100mm) is usually accompanied by a deeper tread depth (say, 500mm), and vice versa - so a riser height of 200mm would normally be associated with a shallower tread depth (say 250mm). To build garden steps to connect two levels you will need to work out your overall height by run distance. For this example we will use a distance of 4 metres and a height of 2 metres. We know that we want a step of around 150mm so to calculate the number of steps we divide 2.000mm by 0.150mm = 13.333. The average cost of bricks ranges between £120 to £180 per m2 depending on the type. Labour costs The biggest cost in a brick steps project tends to be the labour. As well as the laying and treating of the bricks, the area will need to be prepared before starting. An experienced bricklayer will charge on average £280 per day.
