Càrn a'Mhaim is a southern satellite of Ben Macdui, to which it is linked by long and very narrow ridge, an unusual feature for the Cairngorms. Càrn a'Mhaim is well seen from Derry Lodge and provides a worthwhile ascent in its own right, though it is even better if continuing to its mighty parent. Carn a' Mhaim Munro Description Carn a' Mhaim, overlooking Glen Dee has a long ridge descending N to a beallach at 800m, lying S of the summit of Ben MacDui. The W slopes of this ridge are craggy and steep and best avoided, whereas the E slopes are of a more moderate incline. Carn a'Mhaim is a long and magnificent narrow ridge walk to the east of the upper Dee valley (said to be the only real narrow-ridge walk in the Cairngorms), gazing across that great glen to the Cairn Toul massif. Climb onto the ridge from the south, just west of upper Glen Lui, a steep beginning, and head on up rough boulders toward Ben Macdui. This demanding route takes in the southern approach of Britain's number two mountain, Ben Macdui, from the south along with another spectacular Munro, Carn a' Mhaim. Carn a'Mhaim is predominantly heather covered, thicker lower down, stunted higher up. If aiming to bag Carn a'Mhaim on its own, the approach from Linn of Dee via Derry Lodge and through Gleann Laoigh Bheag makes for a fine approach on estate tracks and well-defined paths on the hillsides and higher ground.

Travel Information An easy 2km ridge walk above the Lairig Ghru leads to the col below Ben Macdui and the start of a tough 500-metre climb, much of it over a rough boulder-field, to the 1,309-metre-high summit. For the third day of my walking holiday in Braemar in June 2015 I decided to climb the relatively easy summit of Carn a'Mhaim.
