Cruit is an island in the area of Donegal called "The Rosses". The name "Cruit" (pronounced "Critch") is derived from the Irish "An Chruit" meaning 'the hump or little hillock' although it is also the old Irish word for the harp. Cruit is connected to the mainland at Belcruit by a bridge built at the time of World War II, and the bridge, some of the finest beaches in Donegal and the golf course combine to make the island a very popular destination. Cruit (pronounced "Critch") Island, off the coast of West Donegal near Kincasslagh, is a small island measuring roughly 3 miles by one mile. It is approached by a bridge so access to it is easy. Beside the road bridge there is a smaller pedestrian bridge. There are no shops on Cruit but the drive back to Kincassalgh is very short. Walk 5 ( approx. 2.5 hours ) This walk is a combination of public roadway and sandy beach. It is only to be undertaken when the tide is well out. Coming out of the cottages turn right for about 300 metres. Access the sandy beach on the left through the pedestrian right-of-way just to the right of the wide gate. Cruit Island is absolutely stunning, and the cottages couldn't be better located- perched on a height overlooking the pounding Atlantic and a perfect sandy beach, its a true retreat from the world. The cliff walks around the island are wonderful, and on the beaches you can collect all kinds of shellfish and wild samphire.
