Operational experience gained in Vietnam had a direct influence on the addition of the cannon. The F-4 Phantom II, specifically the F-4J variant, was a pioneering aircraft that started using operational "look-down/shoot-down" capability. This innovation enabled the F-4J to effectively track and engage enemy aircraft flying at low altitudes.
