Marianne North (24 October 1830 - 30 August 1890) was a prolific English Victorian biologist and botanical artist, notable for her plant and landscape paintings, her extensive foreign travels, her writings, her plant discoveries and the creation of her gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. North was born in Hastings, England, the eldest. Marianne North was a Victorian plant hunter and prolific botanical painter. She was an energetic, experienced and enthusiastic traveller who visited many continents and many countries in pursuit of interesting plants to paint. Between 1871 and 1885 Marianne North painted over 800 paintings while visiting 17 countries on 6 continents in 14 years - during visits to Born in Hastings in 1830, Marianne North began to paint whilst travelling through Europe and the Middle East with her father. After his death, she defied convention and travelled the world solo, continuing to paint the flora and fauna of distant countries.
