The Place Estate with its church and manor house has been in our family for over 400 years. It is set in the lovely Roseland peninsular, is almost entirely surrounded by sea and has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and a heritage coastline. About 200m from the landing stage of the Place Ferry is Place House . It stands in front of the village church of St. Anthony and occupies the site of a former priory . Home to the Spry family from 1649 , remodelled and extended 1840 and later , with a French Gothic Facade . The central 3 storey Porte Cochere ( carriage porch ) has a square section spire with openings matching the Church Spire.

Route Description A circular walk of either 4½ or 6 miles can be started from the ferry landing stage at Place. Alternatively, you can start from the car park at St Anthony Head. This also gives you the option of the shorter, easy, level 'there and back' walk to the stile above Porthbeor Beach just before Porthmellin Head. Nestled on the banks of Percuil Creek and facing the charming town of St Mawes, Place House stands as a testament to Cornwall's rich architectural heritage. As road use increased the ferries reduced and eventually went into abeyance. With the advent of the South West Coastal Path the current service started with the support of the Countryside Agency in the 1980s.
This is because the official route of the coast path from Falmouth is to cross via ferry to St Mawes and then another ferry from St Mawes to Place. If you are travelling to the start of the walk by car then access is not easy. From the A390 (St Austell to Truro road), take the A3078 in the direction of St Mawes. Place Opposite St Mawes is the small tidal creek of Place, which is the destination of the Place Ferry from St Mawes, and the departing or landing point for walkers on the South West Coast Path. The boathouse and slipway was used by the Percuil and St Mawes Ferry, for the twice daily steamer from Falmouth and the rowing ferry to St Mawes.
