The cost of visiting the Barn Garden, Plant Library and Serge Hill together is £47 per person. The minimum group size is 15 people, and the maximum is 40 people. You are welcome to bring a smaller group, but the minimum cost for 15 people will apply. Tom was brought up at Serge Hill, the family house next door to The Barn and so this is his lifelong home. As he explains in the film, The Barn garden was begun when their first child was a small baby and has grown up with their children who are now young adults. The Barn Garden Tom and Sue have lived together at The Barn, in Serge Hill, Hertfordshire, since 1987. Tom was born here, and it is where his family has lived since 1924. They have created a world-renowned garden at The Barn and have been actively improving the landscape in and around Serge Hill for many years. Renowned landscape designers Tom and Kate Stuart-Smith are opening their stunning gardens at Serge Hill near Abbot's Langley for charity. The Serge Hill Project is a not-for-profit initiative based on the understanding that working with nature can radically transform people's health and wellbeing. The aim is to foster community inclusion through gardening and other forms of creativity. The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity, and Health, was set up as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in 2021 by Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith. The project draws on Sue's work as a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and author of the best selling book, The Well Gardened Mind, which investigates the power of gardening to transform lives, as well. The Serge Hill Project will officially open in June 2024, though many seeds have already been sown. The plant library, for example, began life in 2020. It is a living record of 1,500 mostly. The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health was granted planning permission in January 2020. The aim is to develop a community garden on a one-acre site known as The Orchard, at Serge Hill in Hertfordshire, where Tom and his wife Sue Stuart-Smith have lived together since 1987, and where Tom was born.

The Garden Media Guild very kindly recently organised a trip to visit two gardens across the road from each other: Serge Hill is the garden of Kate Stuart Smith and The Barn Garden is the garden of her brother and his wife Tom and Sue Stuart Smith. This was an opportunity not to be missed. The National Garden Scheme opens over 3,500 private gardens to the public each year - to raise money for charities - last year raising donations totalling £3.11 million. The beautiful sunken courtyard garden at the Barn garden was a re-sited Chelsea gold medal winner from 2006. The entire garden at the site has been planted from scratch, with 100's of trees being planted to provide shelter and shade.
