Stanton Harcourt Manor, Oxfordshire, England In 1066 STANTON, including land in South Leigh, was held by Alnod, and in 1086 by Odo of Bayeux: it was reckoned at 26 hides,of which one lay in Hanborough and was given to Oseney abbey c. 1138. In 1579 Walter leased Stanton Harcourt to his uncle Robert Harcourt as security on debts of £3,000; in 1595 his Oxfordshire lands were temporarily seized for non-payment of loans. (fn. 39) In 1602 he conveyed the manor to his son Robert (d. 1630), the traveller and speculator, with whom in 1604 he sold the South Leigh part of the estate. (fn. 40) Stanton Harcourt is a parish and village standing amid fine woodland scenery near the river Windrush and separated from Berkshire by the Isis, which is crossed at Bablocke-Hythe, 2 miles east, by a ferry; it is 3 miles south-west from Eynsham railway station, 2 south-east from South Leigh railway station, both on the East Gloucestershire railway. About Stanton Harcourt is a small, attractive village dating from a Bronze Age settlement. The Harcourt family resided there between the 12th and 18th century and the fine Norman church contains the tomb of Robert Harcourt, Henry Tudor's standard bearer at Bosworth Field (1485) and the remains of the standard hang above his tomb.
