The Watercress Line welcomes back Thomas & Friends. Thomas the Tank Engine returns The Watercress Line from 6-8 August. Families see Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends: Sodor Station Sweepers Rusty & Dusty, Percy, Diesel and Toad, and Sir Topham Hatt. This year there are three different daily entertainment shows for all the family to enjoy. Thomas & Friends will be returning to Hampshire's only standard steam gauge railway the Watercress Line from August 6 to August 14. It will run from Ropley to Alton. Visitors can enjoy Alresford, a beautiful Georgian town where the name for the Watercress Line originated thanks to the plentiful supplies of watercress that were shipped throughout the country. For train lovers, Ropley is a great destination. Days Out With the Kids in Hampshire on the Mid Hants Railway. Not far from Winchester, the Watercress Line's Day Out with Thomas is a must see for all train fans. The Watercress Line is a 10 mile track which takes around 40 mins to travel. You can do this on a range of different steam and diesel trains which stop at different stations.
The line's name comes from the fact that the new railway enabled watercress farmers in Alresford to rapidly transport their produce to market. During both World Wars, the line carried military traffic between the army town of Aldershot and Southampton. Disclosure: We were invited on this day out for the purpose of this post however all opinions are my own. We finished off our Easter holidays with a trip to A Day Out with Thomas on our local steam railway line - the Mid Hants Railway - Watercress Line. We went to A Day Out with Thomas last summer and as soon as the children knew where we were going they were so excited and couldn't wait. The Watercress Line is the marketing name of the Mid-Hants Railway, a heritage railway in Hampshire, England, running 10 miles (16 km) from New Alresford to Alton where it connects to the National Rail network. The line gained its popular name in the days when it was used to transport locally grown watercress to markets in London.
