Witch Wood is what's left of The Big Wood, once the west and south boundary of Lytham Hall Home Park. In 1963 Guardian Royal Exchange took over the Clifton Estate, and the council gifted the remaining derelict wood to Lytham St Annes Civic Society. It was to be a woodland walk for the local community. Situated within the urban area of Lytham St Annes, Witchwood is the most popular woodland walk in the Fylde. Joining Lytham with Ansdell, the walk was created by Lytham St Annes Civic Society volunteers in 1974, when it was officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Witch Wood is a bit of a hidden gem with plenty of locals unaware of it themselves. It's name is not associated with folklore as you might think, and being just a mile or so long it is perfect for a short yet beautiful wood walk, for the dogs or families, away from the nearby hustle and bustle. The award winning Witch Wood woodland walk (pictured above) was created by the Civic Society in 1974. A team of volunteers still maintains and improves it as a public amenity. The Witch was the favourite horse of the local squire, John Talbot Clifton, who lived at Lytham Hall. At that time before the houses were built Witch Wood was part of the grounds of The Hall. It's thought the Witch was killed in a riding accident in the woods, the witch's grave is in the trees by the side of the path. Witch Wood - Post Code: FY8 4BF (Ballam Road End) Lytham is located on the Lancashire Fylde coast, south of Blackpool, and adjoining St-Annes. It can be reached from the M6, either along the M55, turning off at either Junction 3 or 4, or through Preston along the A59, A583 and A584. Despite being narrow, the wood is wide enough to screen out the nearby road and is a wildlife corridor through the town. The year after The Witch's death, Talbot came into his full inheritance. This included land at St Anne's, Lytham, Warton, Westby, Little Marton and Clifton - a total of 17,000 acres and 250 tenants.
