Death and burial Black Jack died after a 29-year military career on February 6, 1976. He was cremated, with his remains laid to rest in a plot at Fort Myer, Virginia, on Summerall Field; his final resting place lies 200 feet (60 m) northeast of the flagpole in the southeast corner of the parade field. The last of the U.S. Army's Quartermaster-issued horses, Black Jack was born on Jan. 19, 1947, and was named in honor of General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. He was branded with the Army's U.S. brand on his left shoulder, and his Army serial number, 2V56, on the left side of his neck. Born (or "foaled") on January 19, 1947, the black quarter horse with the small white star on his forehead was named "Black Jack" in honor of U.S. Army General John J. Pershing, who led America's military forces to victory in Europe during World War I. The horse was Black Jack, a black Morgan /Quarter Horse cross with a little star, who served the Army his whole life and became such a celebrity that schools brought buses full of children to meet him.
