Large Early Nuremberg Brass Alms Dish This large and heavy [weight 5.2 pounds] alms dish is of the early form designated as "Omphalos" in "Nuremberg Alms Dishes" by Klaus Tiedemann, 2015, The only book we have found devoted to the subject. Alms collection dish made of gilded brass decorated with a series of moldings and details both on the edge and towards the center. In this area there is a figurative motif in light relief (Adam and Eve flanking the tree in which the Serpent of Original Sin is rolled). This large gilded brass alms dish was made in Nuremberg around 1500. The entire ornamentation of the umbilicus radiates symmetrically around a central point. In relief, the decoration of revolving gadroons is encircled by a frieze of inscriptions in Gothic letters and fleur-de-lys on the marli. Offering dishes very similar to ours can be found.
