It Started With Steam Power In the beginning, they called the first self-powered vehicles the "horseless carriage" -- used to get from one place to another without using animal power. At first, they propelled these rolling wagons with steam. The automobile was first invented and perfected in Germany and France in the late 1800s, though Americans quickly came to dominate the automotive industry in the first half of the twentieth century. Last updated: August 11, 2022. Cars are amazing! And one of the most amazing things about them is that no-one invented them—no single person, that is. There was no scribbling on the back of an envelope, no lightning flash of inspiration, and no-one ran down the street crying "Eureka". In the early 20th century, cars roared into society and revolutionized modern life. Automobiles and their attendant culture molded labor practices, the fight for civil rights, cities, the arts. 1769 Cugnot In 1769 Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a three-wheeled steam-driven vehicle that is considered to be the first true automobile. Because of the heavy weight of the steam chamber in the front, it had a tendency to tip over when not hauling cannons, which was what it was designed to do. (more)

17th and 18th centuries Cugnot's steam wagon, the second (1771) version Ferdinand Verbiest, a member of a Jesuit mission in China, built a steam -powered vehicle around 1672 as a toy for the Kangxi Emperor. It was small-scale and could not carry a driver but it was, quite possibly, the first working steam-powered vehicle ('auto-mobile'). [1] [10] In 1885, German mechanical engineer, Karl Benz designed and built the world's first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine. On January 29, 1886, Benz received the first patent (DRP No. 37435) for a gas-fueled car. It was a three-wheeler; Benz built his first four-wheeled car in 1891.
In the early 1800s, inventors around the world began building electric-powered buggies. A few decades later inventors in England and France created vehicles that were much closer to modern-day EVs. In 1890, William Morrison built the first electric car in the U.S. The car could go 14 miles per hour and fit six people. The first recorded use of a self-powered vehicle was in 1769 when Nicolas Cugnot, a French military engineer, designed and built an awkward but workable three-wheeled vehicle powered by a steam engine. The vehicle was intended as a tractor for hauling heavy cannons.

The modern automobile, developed in the late 1800s, is based on the internal combustion engine, invented by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in the late 1600s. Here, William D.
