To function, magma smelters must be built with at least one of the eight edge tiles occupying an open space with at least 4/7 magma on the next floor down. The lifeblood of a fortress, a smelter is used to smelt ores and melt existing metal objects into metal bars. The smelter is also where lignite and bituminous coal are processed into coke. To build a successful magma-powered industry in Dwarf Fortress, you will need safe access to this limitless source of heat. One of the most important segments of the magma-based industry is magma smelter, but using them properly may not be as straightforward as you'd like. Dwarves can swim in magma, but only once. ๐ŸŒ‹ Magma is red-hot molten rock that wells up from deep within the earth (but not so deep that it cannot be found by dwarves), entering the map either by the edges or by the area beneath a magma pool. Magma that emerges aboveground is called Lava; however, the substance itself remains the same. A smelter smelting smeltable metal. Magma is an incredibly useful - and dangerous - substance in Dwarf Fortress. It eliminates much of the fuel needed for smelting and smithing, allows for mass production of steel, will burn your enemies to a crisp, and opens the possibility of creating infinite quantities of glass and clay objects. It seems that the magma smelter's and forges previously unwalkable tiles are now walkable, which means that dwarves can fall through them and critters can (and have) come up from the magma when previously they could not. Is there a new way to prevent dwarves from falling through the smelters? Edit: Moral of the story is to plan ahead.
