#1 It appears that all of my innovative English made razors come from Sheffield. This is the last in my collection, and probably the most innovative, the Eclipse Red Ring. It was made in the 1930's by James Neill & Co., which also made the Neillite 400 bakelite razor. Eclipse Red Ring - first impressions. Had a very lucky week, not only did I pick up a first edition lp of Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland, I found an Eclipse Red Ring in the wild for a reasonable price.. All along the watchtower is great background music whilst I write this up. A few days in with the Eclipse and I am suitably impressed.

Improvement 1: Thickness. The Red Ring's handle is skinny to a fault. The feel in the hand, unlike the feel on the face, is not all that pleasant. The handle is certainly usable, but the greater diameter of the Quantum's handle makes it much more comfortable to hold. Improvement 2: Heft. British patent no 344280 by W. V. Hudson and J. L. Pickerell is from 5 March 1931 and British patent no 380958 was granted in September 1932 to J. Neill & Company Limited. Innovations include the head design, the adjustment mechanism and the magnet. The ring was painted Red They are a Open Comb / Solid Bar Hybrid. All have the magnet in the bottom of the twist knob, which is probably their most famous features. A hinged lidded box containing an Eclipse Red Ring razor and a packet of replacement razor blades, from around the 1930s. The box is made from compression moulded phenol formaldehyde and has a sun ray design moulded onto the lid. Both base and top have been designed with indentations to improve grip when opening. Shave should be efficient but not overly aggressive. As far as hairline cracks in the handles that is fairly common with these razors just like with the Gillette old type and new razors.
