Fender offered most of their guitars in a few different variations with different pricing for each. Most guitar players were pretty happy with the Sunburst finish with tremolo tailpiece, so that is the most common configuration. By 1964, the Stratocaster was already a decade old and the design had undergone some significant changes since its inception shortly before the dawn of rock 'n' roll. This sunburst example was clearly played long and hard, yet somebody loved and respected the thing. The neck is probably the fattest I've ever encountered on a rosewood-board Strat.

I purchased this Strat from the widow of its original owner in Enterprise, Alabama, but it has now moved on to better things with a friend's band in the UK. 'The Choice of Professional and Student Musicians Everywhere' This 'brochure' is actually the center pages of the 1965 'annual guitar issue' of music magazine Down Beat (July 16th, 1964; Wes Montgomery cover) - check ebay for back issues. Fender had placed similar catalogs in Down Beat over previous years.

The 1964 Fender Stratocaster also stuck with the curved laminate fingerboard made of Brazilian rosewood as you can see in the image below. The main part of the neck was still rock maple and used the same truss rod as well. You can also see the neck date stamp.
