This was the era where hair was backcombed and sprayed with toxic amounts of Aquanet, and the outfits were DIY with leather, lace, and fishnets. Joy Division 's sound (famously described as "gothic" by producer Martin Hannett) was essentially based on side two of Bowie's Low, and The Cure's Robert Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and The Sisters of Mercy's Andrew Eldritch have all spoken about Bowie's impact on their youth.

Goth-inspired 80s fashion was one of the darker styles that saw a lot of runway utilization. 1980 to 1989 brought about many variations of punk and new styles such as Goth. The style got its roots in Punk music and literature. In the early 1980s, punks were among those who stood out from society wearing torn clothing. The Lolita goth, sometimes known as the J-goth, is thought to have emerged from Japan in the 2000s. The style focuses on Victorian and Edwardian clothing. Steampunk is a futuristic Victorian. Goth is a loose musical movement, subculture and fashion style that first appeared in England in the early 80s. In the aftermath of the original punk movement, a new wave of bands - Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, the Sisters of Mercy and more - mashed together a love of glam rock, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, horror. In its original form, goth style was as much about startling individualism as belonging to a clique: something encapsulated by Sioux's exotic make-up, bejewelled gloves and nipple-baring fetish gear. In early-80s London, you might find Sioux so outfitted at the movement's high church nestled in Soho's backstreets, known as The Batcave.
