A character in East of Eden, probably his most popular book, has a natural tilt towards cruelty and suffering and generally sees the world through such a lens. Being "born good" just means you've had it easy in life and you don't have to struggle to keep a good nature. You may still be good, but you might not truly understand evil. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, it's actually what I would want for everyone.
