McLarty If you're liturgically minded, you know that today is Christ the King Sunday, the final Sunday of the Christian year. The New Year for us begins on the first Sunday of Advent - which is next Sunday - not January 1. It includes: • Jesus' prediction that Peter would betray him (22:31-34). • His warning to the disciples of difficult times ahead (22:35-38). • His prayer on the Mount of Olives (22:39-46). • His betrayal and arrest (22.47:53). • Peter's denial (22:54-62). • The mocking and beating of Jesus (22:63-65). • Jesus before the Council (22:66-71). Here on the cross, Jesus Christ shows what kind of King he is, and reveals what we already know from the gospels: his reign faces opposition and mockery, but is rooted in loving mercy and prayer. Jesus meets the continuous mockery with mercy, taunts with forgiveness, ignorance and insolence with fortitude, and humility with welcome.

"He saved others, let him save himself!" That, of course, is exactly the point of how Jesus is enacting God's reign of mercy, by not saving himself. But they are blind. Then they cite the heart of the Biblical story as accusations against Jesus: "If he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one."

Luke 23:33-43 challenges us to expand our notions of who deserves mercy. The passage is structured around three instances of mockery leveled against Jesus (verses 35, 36, 39). Stating only that Jesus was crucified alongside two criminals (verse 33), Luke's narration does not dwell on the mechanics of crucifixion. November 24, 2019 Gospel Revised Common Lectionary View Bible Text Commentary on Luke 23:33-43 Emerson Powery This passage seems like an odd selection for Christ the King Sunday. Indeed, the inscription above Jesus' head reads "This is the King of the Jews."
The truth was that Jesus in one sense gave in to the taunts on the cross—but in so doing he turned those taunts on their head. Being the Son of God meant suffering and dying. Coming down off that cross, inuring himself to harm and injury, would have been a profoundly wrong thing for the Christ, the Son of God, the King of the Jews to do. Luke's audience saw that blaze when Rome set fire to the Temple in 70 CE. When the torturers arrive at their chosen spot, horrifyingly named "Cranium," the storyteller makes sure we notice the Jewish host (in Greek, laos, the word for faithful Israel) stands watching. Here, Luke uses the word theoreon, watching, for the activity of the host.

It would feel terrible — painful and bloody. And then at the same time, two criminals were also killed by being hung on nearby crosses. One of the two criminals, while still alive, believed Jesus was a different kind of king and said, "remember me Jesus when you come into your kingdom.". Then Jesus reassured the thief that when he died he. Luke 23:33-43. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. [ [ Then Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.']] And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders.
