New and Old Ruth In 1902 the discovery of an immense source of copper ore lead to the founding of Ruth, a company town just west of Ely in White Pine County. Its mining boom rivaled the bonanzas of precious metals on the western side of the state. Scattered over the hillsides were attractive houses, which in many cases had to be moved when mining operations were extended. Around 1855 all buildings were relocated in the present site called New Ruth to allow for block caving of ore in the new Deep Shaft.
