As a member of Charleston Battalion of Artillery during the Revolution, he was among a number of Charlestonians arrested by the British in the autumn of 1780 and imprisoned at St. Augustine.

Often overlooked, Philadelphia Alley is one of the many hidden treasures Charleston offers. Dating back to 1776, Cow's Alley as it was originally called, was access to rental homes behind Francis Kinloch's house. He renamed it Kinloch's Court after he widened it. Philadelphia Alley is located between Church and State streets, connecting Cumberland and Queen streets. This long, brick-paved alley, located in the French Quarter, shows up on maps of Charleston as far back as the 18th century. It was once known as Duelers Alley. ST. MICHAEL'S ALLEY Running between Meeting and Church streets and named after the Episcopal church on the alley's northern side, this slim byway was originally merely an extension of Elliott Street. Narrow and sequestered, it was a favored duelling site.
