The Salt Grass Trail is the original and oldest trail ride that promotes the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. January 12, 2018 Members of the Salt Grass Trail Ride, the oldest and largest ride, trot triumphantly on their Appaloosas into Houston's Memorial Park. One of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's most iconic events ends before the rodeo even begins. Downtown Rodeo Parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, Saltgrass Steak House recaptures the flavor of the open campfire. Steaks, chicken and seafood, chargrilled to perfection. Complete with breads, soups and desserts, made from scratch daily. The Salt Grass Trail Ride was initiated in 1951 by four individuals as a means to promote what was then called the Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo. The original ride was from Brenham, Texas, to Houston. Today, the Salt Grass begins in Cat Spring, Texas, and travels 90-plus miles to Houston, culminating with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Salt Grass Trail Ride, Texas' oldest and longest trail ride covering nearly 100 miles on horseback over eight days, makes a few concessions to modern times but preserves and playfully celebrates Texas' history of cowboys and horses, cowboy hats and stampede strings, and wagons and campfires. Salt Grass Trail Ride The Salt Grass Trail Ride has been around for 71 years, based in Cat Spring, Texas. Their 1,000 riders and 24 wagons travel 105 miles to Houston. The Salt Grass Trail Ride is the "Daddy-Of-Em-All", started in 1952, as the kick-off event for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the biggest rodeo event inthe United States. It reenacts the trail ride of pioneer cattlemen and their herds to Houston from the rich salt grass pastures on the Texas Gulf Coast. More than 6,000 riders participate.
