Handmade pottery bowl made out of a white clay with a blue slip and sgraffito decoration. It was thrown on the wheel by myself in my London studio. It is 8cm tall and has a diameter of 13.5cm. All items in my shop are made by hand and therefore colours may vary slightly from the photograph. This bowl is 18″ in diameter and was thrown from a terra cotta clay. A white slip was then applied and designs carved using the sgraffito technique, the brown and white part of this design being the sgraffito portion.. Step 1: Lightly Clean the Working Surface. Cleaning the surface of a leather hard bowl. In this tutorial, the demonstration piece is a large salad bowl on the dry side of the leather hard stage—almost bone dry. To prep the surface, a wrung-out sponge is used to lightly clean the surface. This extra water will also help the underglaze stick. I did a few sketches using it as inspiration. I haven't really done any Sgraffito work before, but it can give a really nice finish. The lines have a much more precise quality than using brushes or wax to decorate. After making the yarn bowl I brushed it with white slip, and let it dry for a few days. I then drew out my design in pencil. Sgraffito involves applying layers of colored clay or slip (a liquid mixture of clay and water) to the surface of a pottery piece. Once the layers are applied, the artist uses various tools to carve or scratch away the top layers, revealing the contrasting color of the clay beneath.
