A character in East of Eden, probably his most popular book, has a natural tilt towards cruelty and suffering and generally sees the world through such a lens. Whereas, for someone born with an "evil nature", choosing to do good is a struggle for every day of their lives. Expending that much effort may show a more *true* dedication to the forces of good, because it implies an active relationship with good, as opposed to the passivity of a good-natured individual. It's all subjective.
