Add garnish where appropriate, such as with soups. Lean longer flat items against those with some height. Use edible flowers or fresh herbs to add some contrasting color to your plate.

The best camera mode for food photography is Manual mode. When shooting in Manual, you're in control of every camera setting, including the aperture, the shutter speed, and the ISO. You don't leave anything to chance; that way, you can get the result you're after every single time you press the shutter. Note that, when shooting in Manual. One strategy that some use is to have the shot completely set up with props before the food is ready and then to substitute a stand-in plate to get your exposure right.
