Cosquer : the Prehistoric Cave Under the Sea As of Saturday 4 June 2022, the replica of the Cosquer Cave in the Villa Méditerranée in Marseille will finally yield its secrets - hidden for 30,000 years at a depth of 37 metres beneath the sea. Résumé (eng) ABSTRACT In 1991 a huge chamber with numerous paintings and engravings was discovered by a professional deep-sea diver after a long (175 m) passage that sloped up from a narrow (1.30 m high) entrance situated 37 m under present sea-level. The story of La Grotte Cosquer and its discovery is the stuff of movies. In 1985, diver Henri Cosquer came across the entrance to an underwater cave system. Over the ensuing years, he visited the caves on numerous occasions, exploring and extending his knowledge of this remarkable location.
