Campo Santa Margherita was a hotbed of left-wing activism in Venice in the 19th and early 20th century, being the home of the local headquarters of the Italian Socialist Party as well as the Casa del Popolo (the People's House). The osterie in the square were frequented by radical activists. Campo Santa Margherita, surrounded of houses from the XIV and XV century, is a very well known meeting point of the Dorsoduro District area. The Campo has an almost rectangular shape and owes its name to the Church of Santa Margherita, now deconsecrated and famous for its severed bell tower, which over the years has been used as a tobacco factory, as a deposit of marble, study of a sculptor, until it became a sort of cinema, which in turn, over the years, became the home of the audit. Santa Margherita (POI #1) is one of the oldest churches in Venice, dating back as far as the year 836, being consecrated in 853 during the reign of Doge Pietro Tradonico. The current church dates from 1687.
