The Nissan R390 GT1 was a racing car built in Atsugi, Japan. It was designed primarily to gain a suitable racing entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997 and 1998. It was built to race under the grand touring style rules, requiring a homologated road version to be built. The new R390 GT-1 made its impressive Le Mans debut at the 1997 pre-qualifying event on May 4th, with the car driven by Martin Brundle and Jörg Müller being the fastest on the grid; 0.647 seconds ahead of the previous year's race-winning Porsche WSC-95, and a bit more than 1.5 seconds faster than the fastest Porsche 911 GT1 factory car.

Much of the development time available was spent on fine-tuning the machine's aerodynamics. The biggest difference between the 1997 and 1998 spec R390s was the longer rear end on the later cars. The only Nissan parts used were headlights from the 300 ZX. There were inevitable similarities between the new car and the Jaguar XJR-15, particularly around the cockpit profile and rear deck.
