The 850 T5-R was Volvo's first performance-oriented trim level. Beforehand, they would add turbocharging to their models for added power, but never reached a level to where they would be considered competitors to, say, a BMW M3. This was the case for the T5-R, however. So successful was the 850 T5-R (helped immensely by those British Touring Car Championship cars) that Volvo extended its production run into '96, ultimately segueing into the equally awesome 850R.
