Anton van Der Lem In 1568, the Seventeen Provinces in the Netherlands rebelled against the absolutist rule of the king of Spain. A confederation of duchies, counties, and lordships, the Provinces demanded the right of self-determination, the freedom of conscience and religion, and the right to be represented in government. Van der Lem first published his account on the troubles in the Low Countries in 1995. The work under review here is a translation of the 2014 revised Dutch edition. The revolt in the Netherlands was a complicated conflict which lasted 80 long years, interrupted by a 12 years truce from 1609 to 1621.
