Frank Helmut Auerbach (born 29 April 1931) is a German-British painter. Born in Germany, he has been a naturalised British subject since 1947. He is considered one of the leading names in the School of London, with fellow artists Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. JYM is Juliet Yardley Mills, who died in 2001 and after she became too ill to sit, really missed it. Even in terms of an individual drawing or painting, sitting for Auerbach means you are in it. He has used three principal models throughout his career: his wife Julia, who first posed for him in 1959; Juliet Yardley Mills ('J.Y.M.'), a professional model whom he met in 1957; and his close friend Estella (Stella) West ('E.O.W.'), the model for most of his nudes and female heads prior to 1973. Rarely leaving Britain, he lives and works in. The model in the Figure on a Bed series was J.Y.M. (Juliet Yardley Mills), a professional life model whom Auerbach had met in 1956 at Sidcup College of Art in Kent. She began modelling for him in 1957 and was the first person to be painted in his studio. The mid-1960s were a period of transition in Auerbach's work. Using special brushes and working meticulously from reproductions, Brown's versions of Auerbach's portraits of Juliet Yardley Mills are super-flat, precise and deeply uncomfortable. As Brown acknowledges, 'My slowly painted detail encapsulates the flesh of the figure like a painstaking autopsy.'
