72 Comments Last week I made a short visit to the Pinecraft Amish community at Sarasota, Florida. I wanted to share that visit with you via a series of photos. If you haven't heard of it, Pinecraft is an unusual Amish community for a few reasons. It is located in a city ( Sarasota, population 52,811-technically just outside city limits). History In the 1920s, Amish and Mennonite farmers were persuaded to come to Sarasota to use the land for agricultural purposes, primarily to grow celery, a common Amish crop. When they arrived, they found the soil was not suitable for extensive celery crops, but the weather enticed them to stay. or at least visit on a regular basis. The Amish town of Pinecraft, Florida is about 3,000 residents strong and is smack dab in the heart of Sarasota. Flickr b-cline Ohio and Pennsylvania are well-known for their Amish communities. However, if you've been wondering if there are Amish in Florida, you're in for a real treat when you visit this tiny town. The Amish community in the Sarasota-area Pinecraft neighborhood is one of the most unique Amish settlements. 18 Comments I've been getting a lot of emails about a recent New York Times story about the Pinecraft Amish community, aka the "Amish Las Vegas". Pinecraft is a neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida, and home to the only Amish population in the Sunshine State. In the coming months, with the arrival of low temperatures and the slowdown of the farming season, thousands of Amish people in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania will pack their bags and head south.
