Brigadier General Charles Elwood Yeager ( / ˈjeɪɡər / YAY-gər, February 13, 1923 - December 7, 2020) was a United States Air Force officer, flying ace, and record-setting test pilot who in October 1947 became the first pilot in history confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. Yeager was raised in Hamlin, West Virginia. The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. Yeager soon upgraded to a P-51D Mustang, which he christened "Glamorous Glen II," later to be followed by a P-51C Mustang named "Glamorous Glen III." Yeager flew his first combat mission in February 1944. I was thinking this would be a quick build (and it should have) but it ended up taking me almost three months. The model is built straight out of the box. The North American P-51 Mustang was designed as the NA-73 in 1940 at Britain's request. The design showed promise and AAF purchases of Allison-powered Mustangs began in 1941 primarily for photo recon and ground support use due to its limited high-altitude performance. Glamorous Glen III was the mount of Captain (later Brigadier General) Chuck Yeager while on combat operations with the 357th Fighter Group in England in 1944. Having previously flown the P-51B and C, the D was the airframe he scored the majority of his credited 12.5 kills in. The aircraft was named for Yeager's 20 July 1944 Two North American P-51C-5-NTs, 42-103655 and 42-103728, flown by 2d Lt. John Keane "Jack" Egar and 2d Lt. James R. Cope, respectively, crashed on this date.
